Located on the picturesque Monterey Peninsula, Asilomar State Beach is a dynamic spot along the Pacific coastline featuring breathtaking views, white sandy beaches, rocky crags, a protected dune ecosystem, and historic architecture by famed designer Julia Morgan. Visitors have great opportunities for sightseeing, beach fun, whale watching, and educational tours of the Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary. Explore the expanded area by taking a stroll along the scenic coast trail – a boardwalk loop spanning from the coastline, through the dunes, to the Asilomar Conference Grounds.

Asilomar Coast Trail

Extending for one mile along the state beach, Asilomar Coast Trail is a scenic path connecting pedestrians from the coast across the dunes to the Asilomar Conference Grounds. Along the trail, you’ll find several side paths that fork off to tide pools, private pocket beaches and views of marine life, including seals, sea lions, sea otters, and migrating California gray whales.
 

Self Guided Tours

Asilomar Park offers four different self-guided tours that explore the nature and history of the park, including Coast Trail, Forest Walk, Julia Morgan Architecture, and Living Dunes.

  • Why is Monterey Peninsula's "Refuge by the Sea"?

    Situated on 107 acres of state beach, along the Monterey Bay shoreline, Asilomar State Park is known for its renovated dune ecosystem, butterfly sanctuary and protected marine life, sprinkled with intimate, historic buildings. This quaint and tranquil Monterey Peninsula area is referred to as “Refuge by the Sea”.
  • How is the state protecting the wildlife and habitats?

    Beginning in 1999, California established a statewide, science based network of marine protected areas (MPS) to along the coastline to strengthen the ocean ecosystems and protect them from climate change and pollutions. Currently, there is one MPA adjacent to Asilomar State Beach and three additional nearby MPAs.
